One starting point

The Business
Infrastructure
Diagnostic

Every business already has an infrastructure: formal or informal, staffed or largely carried by its owner.

The diagnostic examines that arrangement in relation to your intended outcome, before deciding what should change.

How an engagement begins

Explore the examination

01

Your intended outcome

What are you asking the business to accomplish? Which priorities, standards, and decisions should guide the people and arrangements around it?
02

How the work actually happens

Examine existing responsibilities, working relationships, resources, and decision-making arrangements, including the work you continue to carry yourself.
03

Where the structure diverges

Consider unclear authority, overlapping responsibilities, competing priorities, and conditions that may prevent the arrangement from delivering what you expect.
04

What the findings establish

Written findings identify relevant gaps, constraints, and priorities, providing a considered foundation for your next decisions. Any redesign is a separately defined engagement.

The framework guiding the diagnostic

Hired, Fired & Required

An examination of what is in place and what needs to be in place, guided by your intended outcome.

Hired

What has already been introduced into a system and what needs to be introduced into a system.

Fired

What needs to be changed, rearranged, removed, or discontinued.

Required

What is mandatory and essential to achieve the intended outcome and sustain it.

The conditions for meaningful work

A business is supported
by more than its staff.

I examine how your business is organized, where responsibilities and decisions become unclear, and what the work requires. The diagnostic establishes priorities for what to retain, change, or put in place, including the order in which to proceed.

Your capacity to participate and follow through is essential. Before accepting business work, I consider your time, resources, and personal arrangements. Further work requires a personal foundation capable of sustaining the demands of change.

Change requires more than a sound recommendation. It requires the capacity to carry it through.
  • Time for direct participation and considered decisions.
  • Authority and resources appropriate to the intended work.
  • Personal arrangements that can support the demands of change.

The principal’s authority

The owner must be
part of the examination.

I work directly with owners who can establish direction and act on the decisions that follow. The engagement begins with the owner or joint owners whose authority defines the business.

Ownership & decision-making authority

51% +

Majority ownership

You hold a majority interest and have the authority to make and implement the decisions relevant to the engagement.

50 / 50

Joint ownership

Both equal owners participate directly, bringing the shared authority necessary to examine the business and consider change.

Direct participation
is required

An assistant or representative may coordinate arrangements. Substantive consulting requires the participation of the qualifying owner or both equal owners.

An independent practice. A restaurant. A creative enterprise. A growing company.
The nature of the business may vary. The owner’s authority to act is essential.

A considered beginning

Inquiry before engagement.

Business engagements begin with an assessment of fit. The scope and terms are defined individually, following review of your circumstances.

01 · Introduce the business

Request consideration

Outline your ownership, current arrangements, and intended outcome through a confidential inquiry.

02 · Establish the scope

Begin with the diagnostic

If the engagement is suitable, the diagnostic scope, fee, and next steps are provided privately for your review.

03 · Consider what follows

Further work, by invitation

Findings and readiness inform whether redesign or other follow-up work is appropriate. Further services are separately defined.

Business Infrastructure · Private inquiry

Begin with the business
you intend to run.

A considered inquiry establishes whether your circumstances and intended outcome are suited to this work.

I maintain a limited number of concurrent business engagements to allow for considered attention.
